Algebra B Math: Introduction to Complex Numbers

This topic introduces the student to complex numbers. This series of five lessons explains the definition of i, how to solve basic quadratic equations with imaginary solutions, and how to add, subtract, and multiply complex numbers.

The student begins the exploration of the complex number field in this topic.

Introduction to Imaginary Numbers

This lesson introduces the student to the concept of imaginary numbers. The student is taught that imaginary numbers are used to give a more complete solution space to quadratic equations. The student also learns that the value of i can have a coefficient.

Solving Quadratic Equations with Imaginary Solutions

In this lesson, the student learns to solve basic quadratic equations where the solutions are purely imaginary.

Introduction to Complex Numbers – Addition and Subtraction

In this lesson, the student learns the definition of a complex number. The student is taught that purely imaginary numbers and real numbers can be combined through addition to make the complex field. The student also learns how to add and subtract complex numbers.

Multiplying Complex Numbers I

This lesson introduces the student to using the distributive property in order to multiply two complex numbers. The student sees the result of multiplying complex numbers is another complex number.

Multiplying Complex Numbers II

In this lesson, the student learns the pattern for the powers of i. The student identifies this pattern repeats every fourth power of i.
