Grade 4 Math: Decimals: Equivalents and Comparison

Fraction and Decimal Equivalents: Tenths and Hundredths

This lesson provides additional practice on rewriting fractions that represents tenths and hundredths less than 1 as decimals, and vice versa. Fractions are converted to decimals. Decimals are converted to fractions.

The purpose of the lesson is to build fluency with converting fractions to decimals and converting decimals to fractions.

All fractions and decimals used are less than 1.

Comparing Decimals with Symbols

In this lesson, students learn to compare the size of decimals to thousands, with decimal numbers that are both greater than and less than 1.

As with comparison of whole numbers, the decision about which number is greater is based on an understanding and use of place value concepts.

Students are taught a systematic way to compare the decimals, working from the largest place value to the smallest place value, which is left to right, and the rationale for doing so.

Ordering Decimals on a Number Line

In this lesson, students extend what they learned in the prior lesson to order three numbers that are either fractions or decimals, on a number line marked in tenths.

Students select the fraction or decimal that corresponds to each of three points shown on the number line.
