Glossary of Terms

A

Assessment
a test that can be named, saved, and assigned to students in the iKnow Math manager. Students access assigned tests by clicking iKnow Math on the iLearn Hub.

B

Benchmark
in iKnow Math, this test delivered at each student’s enrolled grade-level can be offered in Long-form (around 25 questions) or Short-from (around 12 questions). iLearn recommends assigning three or four times throughout the school year to document progress, and assigning by a district administrator to streamline reporting of tests.

C

Chapter
a section of content in iPASS and MyQ that starts with a Chapter Challenge Test followed by a set of Lessons, and ending with a Chapter Mastery Test. Students can challenge past a Chapter with no more than one incorrect answer on the Chapter Challenge Test. To complete the Chapter and move forward, students must score 80%+ correct on the Chapter Mastery Test. There are multiple Chapters in each Unit.
Chapter Challenge Test
the test at the beginning of a Chapter (each Chapter) in iPASS and MyQ. Typically eight questions cover the content of the Chapter. In iPASS and MyQ, completing the test with one or fewer incorrect answers skips the student over all lessons in the Chapter, and immediately forward to the next Chapter Challenge Test. In MyQ the student skips to the next Chapter Challenge only if multiple Chapters are in the assigned queue.
Chapter Mastery Test
the test at the end of a Chapter (each Chapter) in iPASS and MyQ. Typically 10 questions cover the content of the Chapter. In iPASS and MyQ, a score of 80%+ moves the student forward to the next Chapter, starting with the Chapter Challenge Test. In iPASS a score less than 80% moves the student to a set of practice questions, and another chance to pass the Chapter Mastery Test. In MyQ after scoring less than 80% and completing the practice, the student can select either the Chapter Mastery Test or the Chapter Practice.
Class
a group of students for instructional and reporting purposes. A teacher’s class can include students for which she is the Teacher of Record, and also Virtual Views of students for which she is not the Teacher of Record.
Cumulative Review
a retention building exercise occurring intermittently after passing Chapter Challenge Tests. Cumulative Reviews are like Lesson Practices, but can pull questions from several prior Chapters or Units.

D

District administrator
a user in iLearn that can view reports at the district level and for any school, teacher, or student in the district. This user can also assign iKnow Math assessments to all students in the district, or all students at certain grade levels within the district. iLearn recommends iKnow Benchmark and Universal Screening assessments be assigned by the district administrator to improve reporting when students tend to move from school to school within the district. By searching for, and clicking a specific school, teacher, or student the district administrator can see just the reports the selected user level sees.

G

Grade Level Test
in iKnow Math, a test assigned by a teacher level, delivered at each student’s enrolled grade level (1-8). This can be assigned as a Grade Level Test (Long-Form ~25 questions or Short-Form ~12 questions).

I

iKnow Manager
this utility, accessed in Management (LMS), allows a teacher (or school or district administrator) to create, save and assign a test and due date, including a Benchmark Test, Progress Monitoring, and Universal Screener.
iKnow Math
an assessment program allowing teachers and administrators to create and assign Universal Screening, Benchmark/Grade Level, and Progress Monitoring assessments to students. Educators control who is assigned to the assessment and when the assessment is due.
iLearn Hub
after logging in to iLearn, this page displays buttons to open all available applications such as iPASS, MyQ, iKnow Math, vBook, Reports, Management, etc. All available applications display in color. Return to this page to enter a different application.
iPASS
a highly automated instructional program that controls the instructional process and frees the teacher to interact on a one-to-one basis with students. It includes diagnostics, conceptual instruction, systematic practice and mastery testing. It’s a truly mastery-based instructional program that delivers only the content needed, starting with the earliest knowledge gap. Students proceed sequentially to higher content, skipping content by passing Challenge (Pre) Tests, and learning to mastery content needed, and passing Mastery (Post) Tests, with the program making detailed content delivery decisions based on student performance.

L

Learning Progression
for K-12 schools using Common Core State Standards, a topic that spans a number of grade bands. An iLearn Learning Progression is a preselected list of topic-specific content that can be saved in a queue and assigned in the MyQ Manager. It consists of a string of iLearn Chapters in sequence from the lowest grade level to highest. We call them “Intelligent” Learning Progressions since MyQ retains much of the mastery-based requirements of iPASS, and also allows students to skip over lessons and chapters that they already know. One of the most needed Learning Progressions is fractions. Consider assigning it to all students to deepen the understanding and improve abilities to succeed at higher levels.
Lesson
a section of content in iPASS and MyQ that starts with a Lesson Challenge Quiz followed by a Lesson Instruction, and ending with a Lesson Practice. Students can challenge past a Lesson with no more than two incorrect answers.
Lesson Challenge Quiz
the quiz at the beginning of a Lesson (each Lesson) in iPASS and MyQ. Typically several questions cover the content of the Lesson. In iPASS and MyQ, with no more than two incorrect answers, a student skips the Lesson, and immediately moves forward to the next Lesson Challenge Quiz.
Lesson Instruction
multimedia presentations typically five to ten minutes in length, that teach the student the mathematical thinking needed to understand and answer questions in the Lesson’s practice. In iPASS and MyQ, Lesson Instruction includes practice questions to quickly determine whether the student has reached minimal mastery needed to advance to the next part, Lesson Practice. In vBook, Lesson Instruction includes only multimedia presentations, and practice questions are provided only in Lesson Practice.
Lesson Mixed Practice
in some Lessons after the first Lesson of a Chapter, a part of the Lesson that includes questions from prior Lessons in the Chapter.
Lesson Practice
a part of the Lesson following Lesson Instruction that includes practice questions verifying the student has reached a mastery criterion (typically answering several questions correct, depending on the requirements of the particular lesson, with one correct answer deducted when an incorrect answer is entered). In iPASS, on meeting the criterion, the student typically moves to the Lesson Mixed Practice and then to the next Lesson Challenge Quiz. In vBook, Lesson Practice is an optional selection that allows a student to answer questions with immediate evaluation, to practice mathematical thinking learned in the Lesson Instruction. In vBook, the student can complete unlimited Lesson Practices by selecting it in the menu.

M

Management (LMS)
Learning Management System (LMS) allows you to create, edit, and remove student accounts, add Virtual Views to classes, and create and assign iKnow Math assessments and queues of content in MyQ.
Messenger
a communication feature that allows a teacher to send a message to one student, all students in a class, or to iLearn. It also allows students to reply, or send a message to their teacher.
MyQ
an educator-controlled program allowing teachers and administrators to create and assign grouped “queues” of content to students. Educators control who is assigned to the queue, what is included, when it should be completed, and the access order. MyQ combines the control by the educator with much of the required mastery and computer optimization of iPASS, with pre- and post-tests automatically included in any selected Chapter(s). In MyQ, students can only access what you assign to them.
MyQ Manager
this utility, accessed in Management (LMS), allows a teacher to create, save and assign a “queue” of desired content. A teacher can also assign the queue to students, and set and edit the due date. MyQ can also be used by school or district administrators to globally assign content, such as a Learning Progression on fractions. If assigned in Fixed Order, your assigned queues can function as mini-courses of iPASS, with challenge and mastery assessment that enables students to focus on learning just what they need while skipping what they already know.

N

Number Entry Checkup
in ThinkFast!, one of several tests throughout the program to determine the speed at which a student is currently entering correct numbers. It is used by the program to compute the student’s thinking time in subsequent fluency tests.

P

Placement Test
tests of typically 15 questions at the beginning of iPASS that identify a starting Unit. A percent correct score of less than 90% moves the student to a lower Placement Test, and a score of 90%+ moves the student to a higher Placement Test. At the lowest Placement Test in which a student scores less than 90%, the student then has an opportunity to skip over Units by passing Unit Challenge Tests. iKnow Math in K12 is integrated with iPASS, and the Universal Screener can be completed instead of iPASS Placement Tests. This offers more detailed data on student abilities at each grade level, and streamlines testing.
Progress Flags
in iPASS, viewing the Highlights or Flags report, a flag appears in the row of any student that may need help advancing. Lesson flags alert the teacher that the student has been in the same lesson for two or more days without advancing. Test flags alert the teacher that the student has repeated the test two or more times without passing.

Q

Queue
a selection of Chapters or Lessons that can be named, saved, and assigned to students in the MyQ manager. Students enter their assigned queues by clicking MyQ on the iLearn Hub.

R

Reports
this is now the location of ALL REPORTS for each iLearn program. Customize reports at many levels including district, school, teacher, class and student. Export reports to PDF or Excel format for printing. From the Hub, click “Reports.” See the Support page (click Support at the Hub) for guidance on the Reports.

S

School administrator
a user in iLearn that can view reports at the school level and reports for any teacher or student in the school. This user can also assign iKnow Math assessments to all students in the school, or all students at certain grade levels within the school. By searching for, and clicking a specific teacher, the school administrator can see just the reports the selected teacher can see.

T

Teacher of Record
teacher that has primary responsibility for a student. The Teacher of Record has editing privileges for the student account, and is attributed the progress of the student in the aggregate reporting by teacher at the school level. The teacher of a Virtual View is not the Teacher of Record, cannot edit the account, and is not attributed the student progress at the school level.
Test Review
in iPASS, a feature available to teachers to review questions and answers in any and all tests students have completed.
ThinkFast
a highly automated instructional program for building fluency in the basic math facts, that delivers instructional support for only the facts a student needs. Students proceed sequentially, with the program making content delivery decisions based on student performance.
Topic Practice
in vBook, a set of mixed practice questions covering the lessons in the Topic. Students complete the practice the same as in iPASS, by meeting the criterion (typically answering several questions correct, depending on the requirements of the particular lesson, with one correct answer deducted when an incorrect answer is entered). Once complete, the student can return to the same Topic Practice at any time and restart from the beginning. If not completed, when the student returns to the same Topic Practice it continues the same practice session, in progress, at the same point.
Topic Test
in vBook, a test covering the content instructed by the several lessons within that Topic. There are 10+ Topics in each grade level.

U

Unit
a section of content in iPASS that starts with a Unit Challenge Test followed by a set of Chapters, and ending with a Unit Mastery Test. Students can challenge past a Unit with no more than one incorrect answer on the Unit Challenge Test. To complete the Unit and move forward, students must score 80%+ correct on the Unit Mastery Test.
Unit Challenge Test
the test at the beginning of a Unit (each Unit) in iPASS. Typically 10 questions cover the content of the Unit. In iPASS, a score of 90%+ skips the student over all chapters in the unit, and immediately forward to the next Unit Challenge Test.
Unit Completion Test
in ThinkFast!, a test to verify fluency with mixed facts at the end of a unit, either Addition/Subtraction or Multiplication/Division. The passing criterion is based on the number entry time computed in the Number Entry Checkup. In addition to answering a number of digits correct, 80%+ of the answers must also be correct.
Unit FreePass Test
in ThinkFast!, a test to challenge past one of two Units, Addition/Subtraction or Multiplication/Division. The passing criterion is based on the number entry time computed in the Number Entry Checkup. In addition to answering a required number of digits correct, 80%+ of the answers must also be correct.
Unit Mastery Test
the test at the end of a Unit (each Unit) in iPASS. Typically 10 questions covering the content of the Unit. In iPASS, a score of 80%+ moves the student forward to the next Unit, starting with the Unit Challenge Test. A score less than 80% moves the student to a set of practice questions, and another chance to pass the Unit Mastery Test.
Universal Screener
in iKnow Math, the Universal Screener is easily assigned across an entire district, school, or class(es). The Universal Screener starts one grade below the student’s enrolled grade level, and delivers tests at sequentially lower grade levels to grade 1. It is highly recommended to have students complete tests until scoring 90%+ for two reasons: 1) to get a screening of strengths and weaknesses at prior grade level content, and 2) if the Universal Screener is completed before the student starts iPASS, the student can skip the Placement Tests in iPASS and proceed directly to the appropriate Unit Challenge Tests.

V

vBook
it’s like a virtual book but NOT a pdf. It’s a flexible instructional program that allows you, the teacher to present instruction and practice in a group setting, flip instruction and have students answer questions in class, or to verbally assign content for students to complete on their own. Use the vBook reports to verify activity and completion without the hassle of grading, attendance, etc. Students can select any lesson or topic, at any grade level, to learn at any time.
Virtual View
when you need to add a student to your class, but the student is already registered under a different teacher, just navigate to the class in the Management utility and click Add Student. Find and double-click the student. You’ll see that this student “will be added as a Virtual View.” Click save to add to you class. You can now easily add Virtual Views of any students on the school roster to any of your classes. When a student moves to another school in a district, all Virtual Views in the previous school are automatically removed.
