The developmental math curriculum in the Class of 1 makes available the full range of content needed for any student to prepare for college algebra. It includes all the topics typically covered in beginning and intermediate algebra plus all the prerequisite pre-algebra content from both elementary and middle school. The curriculum provides everything any student would need at any of these levels. However, it’s important to recognize that this broad range of curriculum is available to every student but not required of every student.
A critical design feature of a Class of 1 course is that it delivers instruction to each student based on pretesting and continuous diagnostic assessment throughout the course. Each student receives only the instruction that covers content they haven’t already mastered as evidenced by these embedded assessments. The result is that every student receives a different, personalized curriculum.
Because the assessment process is distributed across the entire course, the profile of student content needs is not fixed in advance, but evolves over the period of instruction.
The curriculum can easily be delivered as separate courses such as the “standard” 3-hour or 4-hour courses at different levels. However, it also makes it possible to offer more flexible options since students need not be segregated into separate courses after Placement Testing. In either case, a modular schedule is not required, but students can move through the curriculum on a schedule that optimizes the time they spend in pre-college courses.
Students needing minimal review of limited topics can accelerate through the content sequence and complete the course requirements as efficiently as possible. A student who needs extensive pre-algebra content can move as quickly as possible while receiving a broad curriculum that provides a solid foundation for later algebra content.
