Succeeding in a math class is like running a marathon. When there's so much to be accomplished,
every single step must take you toward the goal.
At iLearn, we accept responsibility for insuring that every student learns. We go to great
lengths to insure that "Failure is Not an Option". This is not just a slogan, it's a major
design consideration in everything we do.
The name iPASS is an acronym for "Individual Prescription for Achieving State Standards."
As the name implies, iPASS delivers differentiated instruction that meets the needs of each student.
iPASS automatically delivers pretests to determine exactly which topics the student has already
mastered and those that need to be mastered. It then delivers only the instruction needed for each student.
The content is broken into small, easily mastered steps so that students can "take the next step"
without difficulty. The student is required to master each step before moving ahead.
Making progress becomes very rewarding for students who have been largely unsuccessful in
learning math before. When a student does encounter difficulty, the teacher is readily available
for one-on-one coaching because there are no administrative tasks. The teacher is able to concentrate
on helping each student learn in a quiet, relaxed environment that is far more conducive to such "tutoring"
than a normal classroom where one-on-one interaction is rare.
The data reporting and management system makes it easy for a teacher to identify immediately when a
student starts having difficulty or is not interacting with the program in a productive manner.
The purpose of this oversight function is to insure that students never spend long periods of time
without making progress. If a student is to be successful on a state test, that student must be
successful every day during the year. Otherwise, progress will not be realized or it will be too slow
to be worthwhile.
Even the best curriculum is not effective if it's not implemented effectively.
In designing GAINS, we addressed all the issues that must be managed to be successful,
from analysis and planning to scheduling and followup. Student data is aggregated at many levels - the class,
the teacher, the grade, the school, or the district. These data make it easy to see whether the program is
being implemented according to plan. Standard reports make it easy to determine whether implementation is
proceeding according to plan. If it starts to stray from the plan, the reports make it easy to determine
on a timely basis what needs to be corrected.
In short, we make it easy to manage the learning process at a very detailed level for every student.
Nothing is left to chance. Only by doing this can we be sure that Failure is Not An Option.
